DAAD Scholarships 2023-2024

The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) aims to enhance the expertise of professionals from developing and newly industrialized nations. Well-trained local specialists, connected with global partners, are pivotal for the sustainable development of their countries. They represent a vital assurance for a future characterized by reduced poverty, enhanced education, and improved healthcare for all. The scholarships offered provide foreign graduates from these regions, across all fields, with a minimum of two years’ professional experience, the opportunity to pursue postgraduate or Master’s studies at a state or state-recognized university in Germany. In exceptional cases, doctoral studies are also supported, allowing recipients to obtain a university qualification (Master’s/PhD) in Germany.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Open to: Exceptional graduates from the following countries on this list
  • Candidates have a Bachelor degree (usually a four-year course) in an appropriate subject
  • Candidates have at least two years of professional experience
  • Applicants are required to demonstrate their commitment to development-related goals and exhibit a readiness to assume social responsibility. They should be prepared to initiate and actively support processes of change within their personal and professional spheres following their training or scholarship.
  • Proficiency in the German language may be required for some scholarships, while others may offer opportunities for English-taught programs.

Scholarship Value/Inclusions:

  • Depending on their academic level, recipients will receive monthly payments of 934 euros for graduates or 1,300 euros for doctoral candidates.
  • Additionally, the scholarship covers payments towards health, accident, and personal liability insurance.
  • A travel allowance is provided unless these expenses are covered by the home country or another funding source.
  • In certain cases, additional benefits may include a monthly rent subsidy and a monthly allowance for accompanying family members.

NOTE: Scholarship is valid for the entirety of the study period

Application Process:

  1. Personally signed CV (please use the sample europass form at http://europass.cedefop.europa.eu/) with the current date
  2. A personally signed Letter of Motivation, with the current date, is required. This letter should address your current occupation and your choice of postgraduate program(s). It should be no more than two pages long.
  3. Signed DAAD application form with current date
  4. Proof of Language Skills:
    • English – IELTS or TOEFL (Note: The institutional TOEFL is not accepted)
    • German – Required for courses taught in German
  5. If you are applying for multiple postgraduate courses (up to a maximum of three), you must submit one motivation letter explaining why you are applying for these specific courses and why you have prioritized them.
  6. Recommendation Letter from Your Present Employer; it must be on official letterhead, with a signature, and an official stamp, and dated currently (not enclosed in a sealed envelope).
  7. You must provide Certificate(s) of Employment from your employer(s) demonstrating a minimum of two years of relevant work experience (after completing your bachelor’s degree) at the time of application. Additionally, if feasible, include a guarantee of re-employment from your current employer upon your return home.
  8. Copies of Academic Degrees (certified translation if necessary)
  9. Copies of Academic Transcripts, including grading scale (certified translation if necessary
  10. Applicants from the People’s Republic of China are asked to submit an APS Certificate with their application documents
  11. Deadline: Depending on chosen study programme; please check scholarship brochure or the website of your chosen study programme.
