Japan Foundation for UNU (jfUNU) Scholarship

The Japan Foundation for UNU (JFUNU) Scholarship supports students from Developing Countries identified in the OECD DAC list to enroll in the PhD programme in Sustainability Science at the United Nations University. This three-year initiative fosters scholars with diverse insights into sustainability concerns, integrating global change perspectives including climate change and biodiversity. Participants undertake research-driven studies, engage with prominent scholars and policymakers, and develop essential critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. The programme commences in September, with students anticipated to fulfill all academic requisites by July of their third year. Currently, applications for the scholarship are not being accepted.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Open to: Individuals who have completed bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a recognized institution.
  • Must be from a developing/poor country. See list
  • A GPA of 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale for the bachelor’s degree
  • Proficiency in English, demonstrated through standardized language tests.
  • Individuals who are currently recipients of other scholarships, currently enrolled in other post graduate degrees or living in Japan on a working VISA are ineligible.

Scholarship Value/Inclusions:

“The scholarship provides a monthly stipend of 120,000 JPY* to cover living expenses for up to 24 months. Additionally, tuition fees are completely waived for recipients of the scholarship.”
